LandAid's Party Near the Park rocks on Print E-mail
Mike Slade & the HelicalettesRarely can so many people have had so much fun in a good cause as when, on June 7, the property sector got together at Old Billingsgate for the annual amateur theatricals that is Party Near the Park. Over 1200 fans cheered the ten acts to the rafters as some strange and highly esoteric talent was put on show. LandAid expects that, when the final numbers are calculated, over £100,000 will have been raised.

The winning act, voted on by text, was Mike Slade and the Helicalettes from Helical Bar, who showed that shameless exhibitionism and aggressive marketing will often triumph over talent. Their rendition of Eye of the Tiger will linger long in the memory, as will the legs of the Helicalettes.

A huge vote of thanks is due to the leaders of the production asnd marketing teams, Mairi Bell and Anna Morgan, but all would agree that the true heroes of the evening were Bob Kidby's backing band, Clarence King and the Regents. Never has a band managed to make the mediocre sound so magnificent, the untalented untroubled and the woeful so wonderful. They are true magicians and no one who performed on the night will ever forget the experience.

So, since it is never too late to start or too early to begin practising, let's have all of you budding superstars trying out your number for next year in the shower! We are promised that, next year, Bob will bare his Soul!
