LandAid is delighted to announce two new projects, Centrepoint Ealing and Brathay in Cumbria, that will be receiving grants of £50,000 each.
Centrepoint is a specialist youth homelessness charity and this grant will contribute to a training room and kitchen at their Ealing hostel, which will act as a hub to many of the other south London hostels. We have previously funded Centrepoint hostels in Sunderland, Westminster and Southwark.
We will also be supporting Brathay, a residential activity centre in Cumbria where 4,000 young people from disadvantaged backgrounds come and take part in educational programmes and transformational outdoor learning experiences each year. The grant will fund a training kitchen, teaching basic cooking skills and accredited living skills to young people who are in care, young offenders, vulnerable families and young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.
We would like to thank all our donors and Foundation Partners, whose contributions enable schemes like these to continue helping disadvantaged young people realise their potential. |
As summer approaches, we’re starting to prepare for the sporting event on everyone’s lips - the annual LandAid 5K Fun Run, sponsored by GVA. On 20 June, the cream of the UK property industry will once again descend onto Battersea Park with the aim of raising £50,000 to help disadvantaged people in the UK. This year’s theme is ‘Best of British’ and the best fancy dress will win a magnum of champagne. Think Big Ben, the Spice Girls, Union Jacks and The Royal Family. Entry costs £30 and runners are expected to raise a minimum of £50 to help us meet our ambitious target. You can register in teams or as an individual and all runners are invited to our fully licensed bar afterwards to enjoy some music and a few drinks. |
The two DTZ Scottish offices recently came together to hold their annual Quiz Night which was a huge success with the 50 plus staff who attended from both the Edinburgh and Glasgow offices.
Brian Mitchell, Strategic Clients - Credit Controller, should be congratulated for organising the entire event, both the quiz and the silent auction and raffle to raise much needed funds for LandAid, the property industry’s charity for young people in need. On the night, the generosity of the teams raised a huge £1,426. This was increased by a further £500 from the DTZ fund matching scheme to make an overall total of £1,926 raised.
Prizes for the evening were provided by many local companies and clients as well as DTZ’s own John Forrester, who donated a rare bottle of Irish Whisky. This raised one of the highest bids of the night at £90.00! A fantastic result for LandAid and a great night for Scotland.
Brian said: “Thanks to all those who helped me and supported the night, the silent auction worked really well. Staff bid by email before the event so the bids are kept anonymous. It was a really great evening with our colleagues from Glasgow and we look forward to further events during the year.”

This month saw the official opening of a major flagship Centrepoint hostel for homeless young people in Sunderland which has received £60,000 in funding from LandAid.
At the opening X-Factor winner Joe McElderry brushed up on his cookery skills alongside a group of Centrepoint young people. The South Shields-born singer helped rustle up cheesecakes in the training kitchen before cutting the ribbon alongside former Sunderland FC player, Jim Shoulder, to officially open the Dundas Street service, which is home to 18 young people.
As well as the training kitchen, the new hostel is also equipped with a multimedia suite which has been funded with a lead donation of £60,000 by LandAid, where some of the most vulnerable young people from across the region can receive help to access education and employment, and learn essential life skills, like cooking on a budget, to prepare them for independent living.
Jim Shoulder commented: “The hostel has been fantastically well designed and you can just see the positivity in the young people as a result. It's a home and more to them - a place where they can learn and get the life skills they need for a new start.”

As London experienced an unseasonably barmy February evening, last night 300 people made their way to the Heron Tower to something quite amazing
and really worthwhile. The inaugural CBRE Property Peak Challenge took place yesterday (Thursday 23 February) with 300 members of the property industry scaling the heights of The City of London’s tallest building. The event - on behalf of property industry charity LandAid and the Worshipful Company of Chartered Surveyors – saw agents, surveyors, developers and architects racing to be first to climb up the 230m tall building.
The spectacle was observed by many passersby as the runners would be seen assessing the glass stairwell from the street. The Heron, which at 230m is London’s tallest occupied building opened in 2011, boasting 40,836 sq m of commercial office space over 46 storeys, as well as features such as a 70,000 litre aquarium in the main foyer. At the top the runners were greeted by great views in all directions across the City and some well earned sustenance. Thanks to the generosity of Heron International LandAid hosted a party in possibly one of the most stunning venues in the City. There were tired legs but the enthusiasm remained.
Teams from some of the best-known real estate players in the UK and Europe including runners from British Land, CBRE, Cushman & Wakefield, DTZ, EuroHypo, Helical Bar, Jones Lang LaSalle and Make Architects took on the 888 steps to be the first to reach the top of the Heron Tower on Bishopsgate.
I can now finally confirm that completing the climb in a jaw dropping 4 minutes 46, Sean Paynter from Chase and Partners team clinched the prize for the fastest man, whilst Robert Skioldebrand on the Montagu Evans team won the fastest male veteran category in 5:40. Rachael Beaumont from Russell Cooke LLP claimed fastest female at 6 minutes 20, with Suzanne Gill from Mc Grigors winning the female veteran prize. The prize for the fastest team was awarded to CBRE Joe Bahsoon, David Fraser, Oliver Knight and Luke Appleby, with a combined time of a rapid 21 minutes 09. The top five fastest runners overall were Mark Paynter (Chase and Partners), Joe Bahsoon (CBRE), Luke Smith (Make Architects), Ben Stuart (Make Architects) and Oliver Jefferson (Turley Associates).
