Berkeley Square Ball Jives Japanese | Print |  E-mail
Summer Ball 2007The annual LandAid Ball held in Berkeley Square on July 5 was a great success. Three hundred people attended the event which this year had a Japanese theme with a sake and champagne reception. The marquee interior and table centers were adorned with hanging lanterns, parasols, orchids and paper screens.

The guests were serenaded by Cousin Alice through the reception and Tenors Unlimited made a surprise entrance during desert. After dinner guests danced into the night with 29 Fingers.

All money raised went to LandAid and Centrepoint’s joint project, Foundations for Life. Anthony Lawton (Centrepoint CEO) gave a rousing speech on the impact that Foundations for Life will have on the young people using Centrepoint hostels and facilities by giving them real opportunities and tangible life skills instead of just a bed for the night.

LandAid's Party Near the Park rocks on | Print |  E-mail
Mike Slade at Party near the ParkRarely can so many people have had so much fun in a good cause as when, on June 7, the property sector got together at Old Billingsgate for the annual amateur theatricals that is Party Near the Park. Over 1200 fans cheered the ten acts to the rafters as some strange and highly esoteric talent was put on show. LandAid expects that, when the final numbers are calculated, over £100,000 will have been raised.

The winning act, voted on by text, was Mike Slade and the Helicalettes from Helical Bar, who showed that shameless exhibitionism and aggressive marketing will often triumph over talent. Their rendition of Eye of the Tiger will linger long in the memory, as will the legs of the Helicalettes.

A huge vote of thanks is due to the leaders of the production asnd marketing teams, Mairi Bell and Anna Morgan, but all would agree that the true heroes of the evening were Bob Kidby's backing band, Clarence King and the Regents. Never has a band managed to make the mediocre sound so magnificent, the untalented untroubled and the woeful so wonderful. They are true magicians and no one who performed on the night will ever forget the experience.

So, since it is never too late to start or too early to begin practising, let's have all of you budding superstars trying out your number for next year in the shower! We are promised that, next year, Bob will bare his Soul!

The Anglo Irish Bank Regatta | Print |  E-mail
Anglo Irish Regatta
The second Anglo Irish Bank Regatta was held on June 11 and 12 at Cowes and once again a huge amount of fun (as well as fierce competition) was had by all.  Proceeds from the event were donated to LandAid and we are all massively grateful for this continued support from Anglo Irish Bank.  The event attracted twice as many entrants as last year and raised £25,000 for LandAid.  All of this was superbly organised by EMG (Jason, Rory and team) and next year looks like being even more successful with many boats being booked already.

National Surveyors' Sevens Tournament | Print |  E-mail
Well, it rained on our parade!  Having been fortunate enough to be chosen by the organisers of the National Surveyors' Sevens Tournament at Richmond on May 13, Nature did its best to spoiil everything by dropping umpteen zillion gallons of water on our heads for most of the day.  But how little does It know of the fortitude, the strength of character, and the downright stubborness of property types when it comes to the opportunity to see the industry's young Adonises strut their stuff on the rugby field (and have the odd drink in the process)!

Foundations for Life was the chosen beneficiary of the event and a substantial team of LandAid and Centrepoint staff and volunteers braved the elements to shake buckets, sell programmes and lottery tickets and generally fly the flag of this most important project (click here for more details of Foundations for Life).  Some £4,500 was raised for the project from a crowd estimated at between three and four thousand which, on top of the most generous donation from the organisers, should net well over £20,000 for the cause.

King Sturge were the worthy winners for the third time in succession and comprehensively outplayed RICS Matrics in the final.  The epic performance of former Bath and Scotland no.8 Eric Peters had something to do with it, no doubt, but it was a wonderful all-round performance from the whole team.

Turner & Townsend's Navaz Chichgar won the first prize in the raffle (two tickets for the forthcoming Princess Diana Memorial Concert at Wembley) and two streakers dressed only in blue stetsons successfully drowned out the Chief Executive's thank-you speech at the end of the day.  Many thanks to everyone who turned out, volunteered to help with the day, supported our collectors and generally made sure that a great time was had by all despite the conditions.
