Leading opinion formers take part in first ever LandAid Future of London Debate The very first LandAid Future of London Debate took place last night on 20 October at the GLA Debating Chamber within the iconic City Hall. The Mayor Boris Johnson introduced the Question Time-style debate which was moderated by Today programme broadcaster Sarah Montague and has raised £40,000 for the property industry charity LandAid. The discussion focused on what steps must be taken to ensure the capital’s future viability and success, particularly in relation to the property sector and the economy. Over 250 senior players from across the capital’s commercial property and business sectors attended this exclusive invite only event. Each of them were offered the chance to field questions to an impressive panel of leading opinion formers on a wide range of issues including the impact of the comprehensive spending review, the City as a financial centre, transport, the ‘localism’ agenda, the Olympic legacy and overcoming poverty. The panellists were: • Sir Simon Milton - Chief of Staff; Deputy Mayor for planning, housing & sustainable development • Daniel Moylan - Deputy Chairman of Transport for London • Baroness Margaret Ford - Chair, Olympic Park Legacy Company • Sir Terry Farrell - Architect and Masterplanner • Ian Hawksworth - Chief Executive, Capital & Counties • John Bird - Founder of The Big Issue • Michael Spencer – CEO, ICAP plc Robin Broadhurst, LandAid Chairman said: “We have been overwhelmed by how much of an appetite there is for this type of serious debate about London’s future. Thanks to the generosity of guests we have raised at least £40,000 for LandAid. In the light of today’s funding announcement this money will be even more vital in delivering projects that give the young and disadvantaged in London access to the facilities, skills and opportunities to achieve their potential.” The LandAid Future of London Debate was an idea originally thought of by Susan Freeman of Mishcon de Reya and Mike Slade of Helical Bar, with the added support of Patricia Brown of Central, as a way of achieving a higher profile for LandAid and raising funds.
