MEPCOn Friday 15 October some of the biggest names in the UK commercial property industry united to take part in the first ever LandAid Day, a sector-wide fundraising event which is expected to raise £100,000 for the property industry charity, LandAid.

Individuals and companies throughout the industry have been raising cash through various shenanigans including conker competitions, cake sales, poker tournaments, row-a-thons, dressing up, dressing down, swear boxes, basketball shootouts and even rock gigs.  Argent, British Land, CBRE, Cushman & Wakefield, GVA Grimley, Hammerson, Helical Bar, Knight Frank, Land Securities and Savills are just some of the leading firms involved.

Support for LandAid Day has reached the upper echelons of the sector, including LandAid trustees Rob Bould, Robin Broadhurst, Lynette Lackey, Liz Peace and David Taylor who are joining the GVA Grimley abseil. John Stephen the former chairman of Jones Lang LaSalle set the pace by cycling from Land’s End to John O’Groats.

The money raised by LandAid Day will fund projects that give young and disadvantaged people access to the facilities, skills and opportunities to fulfil their potential.  For example, LandAid recently funded a new flagship learning and activity centre in Hackney, run by the youth charity Fairbridge.

Fairbridge beneficiary Delvina, 19, said: “I was referred to the Hackney centre by my homeless hostel.  It’s a really bright and friendly environment and nobody feels out of place there whatever their age or circumstances. When I started I was unemployed but now I’m doing work experience for a TV company and am looking towards a career in the media.”

Robin Broadhurst, Chairman, LandAid said: “The property industry’s willingness to work together to raise money for LandAid, even during these tough times, demonstrates the sector’s characteristic generosity and sense of fun.  LandAid Day has been a roaring success with excellent feedback from all those involved.  Some are already planning what to do next year!”
