Earlier this year LandAid, the property industry charity made a grant of £5,100 to the Booth Centre in Manchester to fund two pilot work-based training projects. The centre has just celebrated its 15th Anniversary and is recognised as one of the best day centres in the country; providing homeless people with structured activities, support and advice.LandAid’s grant has enabled the centre to run courses in Health and Safety and First Aid so homeless people can learn new skills. The course was extremely successful with 31 people gaining 49 nationally accredited qualifications. The second work based course gave 15 people conservation experience working on a garden for RHS Tatton Park Garden Show and three months improving a local park for Manchester City Council. Following the courses all participants received individual intensive help applying for jobs or looking for voluntary work. 20 people have moved on to further training, 6 people are regularly applying for jobs and 2 have gained employment. Amanda Croome the Centre Co-ordinator said: “This project has exceeded all its targets. It has increased the skills, confidence and self esteem of all the homeless or formerly homeless people who took part.” John, one of the participants said: “Now I know how to plant trees and hedges. It’s made me realise that I like working outdoors. I’m going to do more voluntary work and look for gardening work like this.” Booth Centre |
