North Liverpool has the highest concentrations of multi-deprived wards in the UK, such as Kirkdale, which has been the focus of many regeneration initiatives in recent years. In some areas there have been considerable improvements; however there remain considerable housing, health and worklessness issues in the ward which will require long-term solutions. Half of all children in Kirkdale are classed as living in poverty, which is significantly higher than the city average and almost two and a half times the national average.
LandAid reaches out to young people in these wards who are most ‘at risk’, by supporting Positive Futures North Liverpool. The charity runs programmes to further personal development, education and training through street-based weekend work, traditional and alternative sports, job clubs, schools programmes and issue-based workshops. In 2014/15 LandAid awarded a grant of £40,000 for building work on essential new premises for the charity previously operating out of an industrial unit with no natural light. In addition, through LandAid, the Liverpool and Manchester offices of GVA Bilfinger have been working together to provide pro bono advice to Positive Futures on negotiating the lease and change of use for a new premises.
