About the Organisation

Home – University House – Legal Advice Centre

University House is one of the oldest community agencies in London, founded in 1886. Their Legal Advice Centre provides free specialist legal advice, whilst it’s A2J Lab provides consultancy support and opportunities for access to justice project partnerships.

The organisation currently runs a pan-London disrepair project. Its aim is to provide support for tenants suffering from the disrepair, and who cannot afford private solicitor and surveyor.

After LASPO 2010 there is no legal aid available for disrepair and therefore, they aim to support tenants affected by this issue.

They also support clients with:

  • Housing- legal Aid
  • Welfare Benefits Appeals
  • Legal Expenses Insurance
  • Specialist Employment Advice
  • Family Law.

LACUH are currently supporting a client via their Disrepair Project.

The client has instructed that he has the following disrepair in his home: a leak from his ceiling which lets in rainwater, damp and mould on the walls and ceiling (including black mould) and cracks in the walls and ceiling. These defects are causing a range of health issues for the client, his wife, two daughters and son, who also reside at the property. These include a case of tuberculosis, asthma and orthopaedic bone issues.

The property has not had heating since February 2024. The electricity was also switched off between February and July 2024. These issues are also causing issues with the client’s mental health.

By way of background, an Officer of the local authority has done an inspection and health investigations and has deemed the property unsuitable for them to be living in.

Therefore the organisation is seeking pro bono support with acquiring an objective specialist surveyor report to help support the family’s case.
