About the Organisation

http://www.sunlighttrust.org.uk

The Sunlight Development Trust is a registered charity based in Gillingham working closely with the community to improve physical and mental wellbeing, ease loneliness and encourage personal independence. Together we achieve our goals by identifying areas of need and collaborating to create wellbeing and social groups for Medway residents. According to the Government’s Indices of Deprivation, 27% of neighbourhoods in Medway are in the top 10% decile of the most deprived in the UK.

50% of our board of trustees are made up of local people and 70% of our staff live locally, ensuring we retain our focus on the needs of the community and why we continue to attract over 100 volunteers from the community. The Trust is currently contracted to deliver mental health and wellbeing services to a variety of organisations including the NHS, Medway Council, the Shaw Trust and Kent Community Foundation.

We currently rent out rooms in our building (leased from Medway Council) to outside organisations including community groups, SMEs and public sector organisations. Our space has a recording studio, our own radio station and a community café, staffed by volunteers with additional needs.

SDT are currently in the process of negotiating a new ten-year lease for the building they currently occupy, which is owned by Medway Council. They have already secured free legal advice to help with this process and are eager to secure a long lease. As part of the process, they are required to assess the level of dilapidation in the building in order to effectively negotiate lease terms.

The centre consists of two parts, one being 20 years old, and an older grade 2 listed section. The building houses a reception area, a café, a hall and 2 large rooms downstairs, a recording studio, a radio station. Upstairs there are four offices a GP surgery, and a family centre. Externally there is car parking and some large sheds.

SDT would therefore welcome pro bono support in the form of a survey to assess the level of dilapidations of the building to inform their lease negotiations.
