About the Organisation

avonneedstrees.org.uk

Avon Needs Trees is a registered charity based in Bristol, focused on acquiring land in the Bristol Avon Catchment area to permanently reforest and rewild, establishing new, permanent woodland. They create woodland to lockup carbon, engage the public with nature, improve biodiversity and strengthen natural flood management, and as a response to the global climate and biodiversity crises. The catchment has gone from being densely wooded in preindustrial times, to only 8%canopy cover, well below the national average, this impacts on the ability of land to lockup carbon and water and support a biodiverse ecology.

They want to reforest the catchment with many thousands of new trees, for several reasons:

  • To sequester carbon from the air, contributing to the fight against climate change.
  • To provide (cost effective) natural flood management. Many of the towns and cities in the area, including Chippenham, Bath, Bradford on Avon, and Bristol are at risk of flooding, particularly as climate change advances.
  • To help enhance biodiversity and protect water quality by reducing nitrogen runoff.
  • Provide valuable additional public space, open to everyone.

Avon Needs Trees is intending to set up a trading subsidiary that will enable them to supplement their charitable income through commercial activities such as accommodation for ecotourism. Proceeds will support their charitable purposes of creating new, permanent woodlands.

The charity would therefore benefit from advice to assist with the development of a business plan and to understand the implications of moving into a commercial space.
